Sluggish performance after ADSL install

I have just activated an ADSL connection and after about 30 minutes of surfing, IE presented an error and said it had to close. Since then, my computer has been very sluggish. The mouse will not move smoothly, stopping frequently as if the PC is using all it's power to process.
I have installed the XP updates but nothing seems to improve.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you added a firewall,anti-virus program,and
spyware removal tool before surfing.Here are some free

According to their website, McAfee Internet Security includes a
firewall and virus protection. I don't see that it includes spyware
detection. Your problem, very likely, is caused by a spyware
infection.

Even if it MAS include a spyware detector, it would not provide as
much protection IMHO as Spybot S&D and HijackThis, both of which are
