SLOWWW????

Jeff

Hi, I just upgraded from SE to XP Pro. For the last day or
so, been playing with the settings but it just feels
slower than with 98SE...menus, etc. I have turned off all
the extra stuff, even have it set to the 98SE look....

My system is not a rocket (k2-400 w/192M ram...4x agp ati
rage ultra pro 128) but it never ran this slow before. I
really notice it on the menus and install of updates.

But what I noticed is extremely slow - if I do an update
at the MS update site, the update downloads very quick but
installs TERRIBLY SLOW....I mean that even a small update
can take 10-15 minutes to install (seconds to download).

This never happened with 98...I know xp has a "restore"
feature. Is that causing the slowdown? If I shut it off,
how else to I restore (like in 98, u can run
scanreg/restore....). I must be missing something here??

Helpppp!!!! way too slow.

Your older hardware is slowing XP down. You need at least 256MB of Ram and
512 is even better. You have alot more
Services running in the background than Win98SE. I triple boot with Win98SE
and WinXPpro and 98 is faster even with
a 2G cpu and 512mb Ram system. What would really help is if you could do a
format and reinstall of WinXP though I'm
not sure your XP upgrade CD can do that. If you downloaded Hot Fix 811493
Uninstall it. It's been known to slow down
XP performance.

Before anything, run disk cleanup and defrag, even if defrag says it is
not necessary. This makes a noticeable improvement on new installs of
XP.

On what day did you upgrade?

You should consider adding Memory! 192 mb is not much for Windows XP! How large is your hard disk and how much free space?

Slow start! For delays before the icons appear on the Desktop use the Bootvis.exe tool -the download on the link page which follows:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.asp

Otherwise I would look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.

1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).

2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article containing a suggested solution.

There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

~~~~~~
Hope this helps.
thx...my housekeeping in 98 was towards "anal" !! It was
sleek and ran well....not 1 unneeded file anywhere. I use
adaware and Spybot Destroyer all the time along with other
programs that clear unneeded files, dupes, etc...also
clean and compress the registry regularly.
Here it seems more like only the 2 items I mentioned are
slow - especially the install of an update.
20G HD with (now because of XP) 16G free.
Will try some of the suggestions...
thx! Jeff
