Slowed Computer

I am using windows xp professional. Hadn't downloaded
upgrades since Nov 2002. Finally did it last month and my
computer slowed down considerably. I have a AMD Athlon
1800+ processor, 1.53ghz, 128 mb ram. Any advice. I plan
to upgrade ram to 512 mb. Thanks.
