Slowdown when viewing folders.

Recently my XP started having a peculiar slowdown. When I double-click
on a folder, it momentarily pauses for about 2-3 seconds. During these
2-3 seconds, the status bar says 'searching for files' and the CPU in
the Task Manager goes to 100%. This happens even if I open an folder
with no files there.

What could be happening and how to I fix it?

Thanks

How much RAM are you running on? Try to remove all unnecessary items
from loading at startup. Find out which process is taking up the
resources. Also delete all ur temporary files and stuff with a clean up
and defragment your HDD to improve file access time.

Unfortunately that is just the way XP works. Its performance degrades over a
period of time requiring one to wipe ones computer and reinstall. My only
suggestion, if you want to have a computing system that doesn't degrade and
continues to function over the long haul, is to use a real operating
system, such as GNU/Linux.
