Slow VPN/Network broswing using "network place"

Hi

We're having some trouble with browsing performance on our network.
When browsing the network using a "network place" shortcut, the browsing
slows down with each directory level.

\\Server\Share Hardly noticable slowdown
\\Server\Share\Dir Slightly slower
\\Server\Share\Dir\Dir2 Slower, quite noticable now.

etc.

Now, on our 100Mbit internal network, this isn't really a problem, it's
relatively quick anyway.
However, when we do the same thing through our recently set up VPN, the
slowness becomes unbearable.

We see no slowdowns whatsoever when accessing directly through the UNC Path.
(By just typing \\SERVER or going through "The Entire Network")
Even though these two ways of browsing looks the same in the address field
of Explorer, the directory tree in the left pane expands differently.
(Either from the "network place" shortcut or from the server on the entire
network)

Using mapped drive letters for each share also works fine.

Obviously we could work around this problem by not using the shortcuts, but
some of my users have found them quite useful.

I've tried using Ethereal to look at the traffic, and this is the only thing
that looked odd.

Trans2 Request, GET_DFS_REFERRAL, File: \SERVER\SHARE
Trans2 Response, GET_DFS_REFERRAL, Error: STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE

I do not see this when I browse using the UNC Path or a mapped drive.
I've searched around a bit for this but can't seem to find anything that
really fits.

This has been tested with the same result using several Windows XP Clients.
We have tried two different servers, one Windows 2000 Server and one with
Windows Server 2003.

I have seen the same results with my network at home, and we have also tried
with a friend from a different company and his machine and their server, same
slow downs.

When searching for a solution I've only found one example of someone who's
noticed exactly the same problem.

He has recevied no solutions on any of the sites I've seen the post though,
and this was posted 18 Months ago.

Remember that Network Places uses Netbios, the legacy, unroutable, API (it is
sometimes referred to as a protocol, although that is not correct). Are you
running a WINs server on this network? If you really want to use Netbios
efficiently, you need to install it.

To read more on Netbios, feel free to read an article here on my website:
