Slow system boot after downloading Microsoft updates

I downloaded many updates -- about 39Mbyte worth -- from
Microsoft web site, including many security fixes and
updates for other types of known problems or tool
enhancements. Now, XP seems to boot much slower than it
did before the updates.

Does anyone have any idea how to correct this? I have
not done a defrag or any other type of disk optimization
since the download.
