slow startup???

Hello, I am currently waiting more than 10-15 minutes for
my computer running windows 2000 professional to restart
or boot up cold.
It is a recent problem only starting within the last few
weeks. I didnt install any new software on the server.
It is not only on 1 pc ..but rather on all the pc's in the
office running win 2000 prof. (the machines running xp or
98se are unaffected by this slow startup scenerio).
So during my troubleshooting procedure i unplugged the
network cable during the long startup process, and within
20-30 seconds the comuter boots up properly, which leads
me to believe that it is a networking isuue.
Does anybody have any advice on how to solve this problem??
thanks for any help,
---daniel

That is usually a dns configuration probelm in that they have incorrect dns
server listed in their tcp/ip settings such as an ISP dns server and they
try to register their dns info with it and find records for the domain
services or they can not contact their dns server or dhcp server if used
[Ipconfig /all may report a network address starting with 169.254.xxx.xxx] .
Interesting that the XP computers don't experience the same problem. Anyhow
I would verify that the W2K boxes are configured correctly in that they
point only to your domain controllers for their preferred dns server and I
would run netdiag on one of them to see what it reports as far as failed
tests/error/fatal warnings. Netdiag and dcdiag are on the install disk under
support/tools folder where you will have to run the setup there. Also look
in Event Viewer on those computer and the domain controllers for any
pertinent problems that may point you in the right direction and try pinging
the domain controller the W2K computers use for dns by first IP address and
then fully qualified domain name such as dc1.mydomain.com. Ipconfig /all is
an easy way to view the tcp/ip configuration of a W2K computer. --- Steve
