slow startup/close down of word 2002

Hello,
I have for about the past four months been experiencing
some difficulty with word 2002 when i try to open and
close it. It runs slower and slower everyday. It takes
about 20 seconds to load and close each time i need to
use it. I have all the recent updates, Symantec Anti-
Virus, and Ad-Aware installed on my computer. Nothing
seems to help this increasing problem. Please, someone
help me or post some suggestions.

Thanks
Joe

My Word 2002 on my desktop only takes about 3 secs if opening blank,
but can take quite a bit longer if opening a document, as it is set to
let Norton AV do a scan of opening docs. Opening a short doc (couple
of pages) takes about 6 secs but large docs can take 10 or more secs
to open. It never takes more than a second or so to close though. My
Word 2003 on my laptop takes about the same times, so your Word would
seem to have something wrong if you are not opening large documents.

Things to check-

Is it only Word slowing down? ie what about loading Excel docs?
If other progs load slow, then it could be a system problem rather
than a Word problem.

Have you done a Help/Detect and Repair from within Word? That may
help if there is a fault in Word causing the slowdown.

Are you loading a lot of macro's on starting word? That may slow
things down.

Have you done a full AV scan to make sure you are not infected with a
virus?

Have you defragmented your HDD recently? if it is highly fragmented
it can slow things down, but it would be across the board, not just in
Word.

Is Word looking for a mapped network drive or some other location that
isn't available or doesn't exist? That could slow loading by the
timeout period. Check in tools/options/file locations.

That probably won't help, but best of luck anyway.
