Slow startup and cpu

My computer starts up very slowly and seems to run equally slowly. I've been
told there're too many startup programs running, and too many things running
in the background. I have no idea which programs are necessary, though some
are obvious. Is there a 'tool' out there somewhere that can safely make that
determination?

Thanks again,
Harriet

Hi Harriet,
Do know how much Diskspace you have on your Computer and the RAM, to know
these things Right click My Computer and select Properties, then on the
General Tab you will see the compuyer name and etc in the Bottom you will see
an option Header title Computer :
Itel( R)
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2 2.40 GHz
2.39 GHz, 240MB of RAM
If you have enought RAM and DiskSpace, you may be infested with Viruses and
Malware which make your System Slow down.
Be sure that you your system is clean from Malwares/Viruses by doing on line
scan from here:
http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/trojswizzoraw.html
http://www.nasstec.co.uk/tools.html
http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=2857
http://www.avast.com/eng/vps_history.html
If all clean try typing this in the RUN Command:
msconfig Press OK
and on the Opening window Select Start up and untick unnecessery Programs
and Applications.
Then while your are in do System Cleandisk and Deferag.
Hope this Helps
Please write back your Findings

Hi, and thanks much, Nass. I've run two different virus programs and the
system is clean. I'll next untick unnecessary programs and applications.
Will get back and let you know how that works. Good website, by the by.
I'll keep a lookout for your gardenware.

I don't know if it is the same thing but it may be worth checking out. See my
other message entitled "Prefetch not working properly (I think)".
(If you can't find it, get back to me & I'll Email it to you).
