slow response to click

1. New Dell Inspiron 8600; XP Pro; 30GB drive; 512MB ram.
2. Paid Dell $199 for a guy to come to my home to set-up
the system this week.
3. It takes a maddening full second or two for my computer
to respond to a click.
4. Is something running in the back-ground that is causing
this slowness? What else might be the cause? What is the
cure?
