Slow response on XP due to DNS

I have a number of XP-pro desktops that have a strange problem on
connecting to the network (boot up). we run a netware 3.21 ipx server and
various IP devices.
when we boot up the xp clients it usually takes 30 seconds to "find" the
novell server. if we play with dns or host file (hosts and lmhosts) we get
various
flavors of new problems. we have 2 dns servers, one that has all the PC
address names/numbers (on an application server ,AIX) and a main one for
general lookup with all our internal mail, web , and forwarded for outside
dns requests. the problem only exists on XP, the NT-4 or 2000 clients work
fine.
users are complaing about the 30 second access to the novell things. i can
provide more specific results if someone has any ideas. all clients are
static,
no dhcp, no windows pdc.

Update:
I think i found the cause, XP was doing a dns lookup on the netware server
(ipx only)
the same name was in use on the ip network, but not running..
REMOVING the name from dns worked
any one else encounter this?
