Your processor is slow.
Your memory is low.
You have too much loaded into memory for your machine specifications.
You have bad icons in the start menu and it is searching for their links.
You just *think* this is happening.

You need to give a bit more information... Machine (hardware) specs, OS
(service pack level, last round of patches, hardware drivers installed,
etc.) and information like how fast things are after the first opening of
the start menu - is it the entire start menu or just all programs? Are you
in classic view or Windows XP view? Does it do it for all users?

Your processor is slow. NO
Your memory is low.NO
You have too much loaded into memory for your machine specifications.NO

You have bad icons in the start menu and it is searching for their links.YES
BINGO.
I think it is working properly now. i see that when I shut it off and open
it to morrow.
thanks
You just *think* this is happening.Could happen

So the point of the line of questions is not missed...

Only *you* can see your computer and only you can tell us what its
specifications are, what has changed between it working properly and it not,
what sort of backups you have in place, what OS you are running, etc. We
cannot 'guess' and provide any accurate information.

When you ask a question in such a blind scenario as a newsgroup - it is best
to give AS MUCH information as is pertinent to your situation.
