Slow opening of word doc in e-mail attachments

I am having troule opening word doc attachments...Very slow, or
non-responsive. Any suggestions?

Other attachment types are fine, such as PDF

Just a thought: do you observe a difference when you download the
attachment first (save to your HD) and open the resulting file?
