When I double click on an excel file from
either "start/Documets or a shortcut on the desktop, it
takes about 5 seconds for the hourglass to show and the
file to start to open. I am useing a new dell D400 with
512mg ram so memory can't be the problem. I also have teh
same situation with word files but not wiht other non
office files. HELP!

What version of XL? If it is 97 check in outlook that journaling is switched
off. If it is a later version, check your virus scanner. I have a new
ThinkPad and NAV shows 'requesting scan' in the taskbar and that can take up
to 10 seconds, depending on the size of the file

Nick:
I am running Office XP and Windows XP Pro. If I open the
files fromn the "File" Menu's recently used files list
they open very fast. They are only slow from desktop
shortcuts and the Documents list on the start button.

To make a fair test, open the file from File, Open so that you have the
same file in your recently used as you have on your desktop,

Check both methods of opening the same file.

Try clearing out your internet temporary files then see if that makes
a difference to either method of access.

And report back your results so we also know the results (feedback),
including the results from the other solutions.
