Hi gang

is it normal for there to be a significant difference in file opening times
between
1/ opening excel and then opening a server based workbook from within the
file menu
2/ going to the workbook on the server and double clicking

differential seems to be a magnitude of 5 or 10

TIA
BobH

We use xl2k at work and if you start the timing with the double click event or
clicking on the Open button, then I've never noticed a difference between the
two methods.

As a test, can you copy a file to a local harddrive and try both ways with that?

(And a completely off the wall guess: Is there any chance that one method runs
the file through your antivirus software and the other method doesn't? But 5 to
10 times worse sounds incredible for just that, too.)

You may want to take a look at these two sites (Charles Williams and David
McRitchie):

http://www.decisionmodels.com
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm

Maybe you'll see something that can help.

(and clean up your windows|temp folder--sometimes helps, never hurts!)
