Slow network after XP Pro upgrade

J

John McCormick

After we upgraded to XP Pro from Win 98 on a small network
of three computer and a print server, network connection
time is extremely slow.

This is in an accounting application. We use one computer
as the file server, and connecting to the files using the
accounting software now takes about 30 seconds for the
initial connection, whereas with Win 98 the connection was
more or less instantaneous.

Nothing physical changed on the network. The only software
change was the upgrade to XP Pro.

Any ideas???

Did you configure your DNS settings in the TCP/IP configuration dialog to
point to your server or is it set to "Obtain IP Addresses Automatically"?
Setting the DNS will dramatically improve the network response time since
each machine won't be forced to find the other machines "the long way".
