slow network access

In Win2k service pack 4, windows explorer responds VERY
slow. Left hand 'file folders' window acts
normal/quickly, but right hand 'files' window updates very
slow (several minutes) when accessing other drives on the
network, but acts normal for local drives. No messages in
event viewer.

I've even tried reload the OS but the problem persists.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

"Mapped drives" are consider *ancient* technology. Keep your Mapped Drive to
a minimum. Explorer has to "scan" the remote filesystem eveytime it
refreshes the display, and is going to be the "victem" of however long it
takes for that to happen over the network.

Most "mapped drive" situations aren't required and can be done better ways.

OK, good to know...

but this is a browsing issue, not a mapped drive issue.
browsing network drives used to work quickly but has now
slowed to a crawl, but only on the 'files' side of windows
explorer - I can navigate directory structures (if I stay
on the left side) just a quickly as I ever could. Is this
a network issue or some sort of corruption in windows
explorer?

What is the operating system of the computer you are trying to access?? Does this
happen to all computers you are trying to access. Do all the other computers have the
same problem? It might be worthwhile to update your nic drivers or try a different
nic/cable/switch port also. --- Steve

No,..I'd say just stick around a bit and see if others may have something to
say. I experience that issue only rarely on occasion and it is usually
because something is busy and doesn't last long.

Problem occurs on this machine only, other OS's in the
network include Linux, XP, Win2K, Win98. I already tried
switching cables/ports, have not tried switching network
card since it is working (?) just very slow, and only in
windows explorer. Internet browsing works quickly (I can
still get a live video feed) communicating with the same
card.
