SLOW, memory constipation?

Recently my XP Home machine became glacial. Even the sign-on screen is slow, mouse freezes, etc. Can't write CDs, printing a picture takes 2 hours! Not a lot of HD thrashing though. Problem came on suddenly.

Stepped back to registries before problem began, no joy. All hardware looks OK. Memory shows full 512KB. 15 GB free on hard disk. Deleted IE history entries. Emptied recycle bin. Checked HD (didn't defrag because that would take a month at my current speed).

Any ideas on what else I can check? Maybe a harware problem? Thanks!

hey kh, run a diskclean under Programs, Accessories, System tools ad after run your defrag to see if that helps.
How old is the pc?.. replaced your CMOS battery lately? ... just a thought.. rob

Are you running xp in FAT32 or ntfs file system,if FAT32 defrag will take
longer, convert to ntfs.If running ntfs,go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:
CHKDSK C: /R Agree to restart,then type:EXIT Restart computer.
Then try defrag again,this time open cmd,then type:Defrag C:
Run cmd in min. window.
