Slow home network

I have two PC's at home, one running XP Pro SP2 and the other one WinMCE
2005, and they connect to the Internet directly through a minihub. Both have
10/100 Ethernet cards. I wanted to network both machines, and for security
reasons, a friend recommended I should use NetBEUI protocol, since it's "web
safe".

I have connected both machines, ran the Network wizard and they see each
other fine, but transfer speeds between them are terrible, it takes about 10
mins to transfer a 700MB file.

From what I can tell, everything is set up correctly, but I am not
network-savvy. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Franco,

Did you setup NetBEUI, and TCP/IP, properly? You'll get network problems, and
security problems, if you don't.

You'd be better off getting a NAT router. Are you paying for two Internet
addresses? Are they always going to be on the same subnet? My instructions
refer to "IPX/SPX"; you may substitute "NetBEUI" if you like.

Thanks Chuck, I'll check the links.
My cable company allows me to have up two IP's with no extra charge, so
thats why it's set up this way.

Well I have made sure that File and Printer sharing are only enabled over
NETBeui and disables on the TCP/IP stack.

In regards of the speed issue, I have noticed that both machines connect at
10Mbps. Should I change the network card settings (they are on Auto now) in
order to force them to work at 100Mbps?

Thanks

You can try forcing the connection to 100F. It's been a long time since I've
worked with any hubs, but my recollection is that hubs operate at 10H. You may
get more problems forcing 100F.

Switches are cheap, even cheaper than routers. Try forcing 100F; if that
doesn't work, then buy a switch.

Yep, you are quite right. Just checked my hub's label and it says 10mbps.
Well, at least I know where the bottleneck is at now.
Thanks for the help Chuck.

You're welcome, Franco. It's good sometimes to revisit the old equipment, and
remember why it sucked so. Now you know why you need to move ahead.

Tony,

Similar to what? You may need to state your problem yourself, as the similar
problem isn't visible.
