Slow browsing from applications

Good afternoon...I have a WinNT 4.0 DC and BDC. I have 8
other Win2000 servers. All of my clients are Win2000 pro.
Some of my users complain that when they open an
application, such as excel, and try to browse to a network
share, it takes thirty or forty seconds for the explorer
function in the app to open. Once it opens, they can move
about freely, connect to shares at will and open files
quickly.
If I browse to the same folders and shares through "my
network places", everything works quickly. It's only slow
through the applications.

Any ideas?

Is WINS installed on the server? NT4 needs it.
Does the ipconfig/all from the clients show that everything is pointing to
the server-IP?
