Slow Boot off the domain

I have a laptop running windows xp sp2. This system belongs to a domain. If I
am offline of the domain, the system takes for ever to boot until it decides
it cannot find the domain and uses the local cached domain profile. Anyone
know of a registry tweak where I can force the system to shorten the time it
spends looking for the domain?

Are you set up to get the standard MS login box, which prompts for
name/password? There's an extended version of that screen where you can
specify whether to authenticate to the domain or to the local machine,
which should be what you want.
