After updating with sp2, my machine now takes ages to load up (sometimes as
much as 12 mins)after a cold boot, but after starts to speed up until it
takes 90 seconds. Switch it off at noight, then back on the next morning and
taking 12 minutes to boot up. when it does have screen corruption with my
9800 pro due to monitior loosing signal in the boot process (however csacreem
corrution does not happen all the time(. doing this wioth 4 previous updtes
before xp2, they where:
KB 839645
841873
840315
842773
After booting run up run more or less fine, though hdd does seem slower to
run. can run doom 3 and enemy territory no probs. done a complete virus
check and nothing same for spyware and still nothing.
chkdsk has now started saying have 4 kb in bad sectors, is the hdd
knckered or is there something else going on?

Please try some basics …

Clean Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and other temporary files:
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/optimizewindowstempfiles.htm

Clean Windows Startup and hidden Startup:
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/optimizewindowsstartup.htm

Check for errors and defragment hard drive:

Spyware/Virus Removal and Prevention:

(Links to online virus scans on the same page)

Also check Event Viewer (Start - > Settings -> Control Panel - >
Administrative Tools - > Event Viewer) for possible errors; And Device
Manager for improperly installed hardware.
Update drivers.

Hope this helps!

Thanx for the reply. Have done all the basics. have sorted the slow hdd,
windows had knocked it down from ultra mode 5 to pio mode. back to almost
normal drive and boot times, dont know if this is the problem or if something
else is causing slow loading. ichecked that the other day to make sure it
wasnt this, so whatever is doing it is causing time outs on the hdd, and
making xp force it into slower mode.
