Sloooooooooooooooow WMM2

Hi there,

I am using a dell dimension 4550, intel P4 CPU 1.8 GHz,
NTFS Partition, 30 GB Ultra ATA/100 HD at 7200 RPM, 128 MB
DDR SDRAM at 266 MHz, Win XP Home and WMM2.

I have some DV tapes and I would like to burn them on CD
as VCD. I use WMM2 to edit (after I capture through
firewire) But WMM2 runs slowly and almost it is
frustrating sometimes especially when you try to toggle
between storyboard and other windows. I understand that it
is recomended to have 256 MB RAM to use WMM2 efficiently.
To increase the efficiency I always disconnect from the
internet, disable my norton antivirus and firewall,
disable background programs in start up group, set the
visual efects to "adjust for best performance" and make
sure that "processor scheduling" and memory usage" in
performance tab under advanced, have been set
to "programs".

As well, I have set the MIN and MAX of the Windows paging
file to 384 MB (unfortuanately I have one HD and my paging
file and system files are in the same HD, but i don't want
to go for making another partition and moving paging
file).

My questions are:

1- There are some services in MSCONFIG that are running in
background and I would like to give WMM2 the oportunity to
use more memory and resources. Which services I need to
have while windows running and WMM2 editing a movie, and
whcih services I can disable?

2-I would like to add that, I usually capture my movies 10
Minutes each (DV-AVI/2) and then import to WMM to edit. I
woner why WMM makes different numbers of clips for the
different imported movies with the same lenght (when you
import them to wmm) while the settings are the same.

thanks davoud

128mb is not really enough..... I found 512mb (PC133) was barely enough, an
upgraded to 1ghz of PC2100.

You're also going to quickly run out of hard drive space which won't help at
all. Each hour of DV-AVI is going to take up approximately 12GB of hard
drive space. You only have 30gb to start with. A hard drive with less than
15% free is going to run VERY slowly.

If you really want to start doing digital video editing, you MUST ensure you
PC is up to the job... and really, at present, your's is not.

Yes I understand that, may be in the future I have to do
that. I have edited a 50 minutes AVI/2 with WMM and burnt
it without any problem in the same computer that I have
now.

The question is that in this situation what services I can
disable in MSCONFIG so that I can edit movie with WMM
while I have the windows audio? and why wmm makes
different numbers of clips for the "imported movies with
the same size"?

thanks for your message cari

While you're exporting or burning, you can disable antivirus software and
things like Seti at Home... Exit from Word, Office anything like that..... I
actually leave the PC by itself and go and use my husband's one (hell, I
built it, I can kick him off it anytime I want) or use my notebook. If
necessary, leave it to work overnight. When I'm using MM2, it's the ONLY
program I'm using. Outlook is shut, Seti is off, antivirus is disabled, etc
etc.

As for numbers of clips, I have recently been working on 66gb size files
that import in a single clip.... and some 4gb files that make 300 clips.
Whatever. I really prefer lots of small ones, if it freezes up in a 66gb
clip, it takes ages to unfreeze! And if you 'forget' where you are, it's a
lot easier to find yourself in a small clip!

Thanks for your message again Cari,

I have done what you said and actually I figured that
out, I disabled most of the services and it runs very
fast and smooooooooooooth...

By the way your message was a good one.. :)
