slide scans too dark

I scanned some slides. Most of the scans are too dark, and trying to
adjust the brightness/contrast afterwards didn't help, since there
isn't much one can do with a near pitch black picture.

Here is a sample pic:

but many are darker. A brand new Atari !!

Anyone know which settings I want to "open the pupil"?

Start with your scanner's histogram ...

Some of my scans came out well:

But many were too dark like:

Holding the slide up to the light, I can easily see the room, the 3
people, the furniture, etc. On the slide, I can barely make out 2 of
the faces.

I changed it back to 300% (from 100%) and it looks better.
