Slide master edir background image

I am working on a presentation in Powerpoint 2002.

There are 3 pictures which we use as a background in various parts of the
presentation but some of the slides are showing the wrong picture.

I have gone into View => Master => Slide Master where there is a choice of
the three images and changed the 'Preserve Master' button to the correct
image, but the picture does not change.

How could I change the image both for individual slides AND for groups of
slides together?

I guess I don't quite understand the problem. Having three masters in a
template shouldn't be an issue.

It seems that you need to apply the appropriate slide master to your slides,
though.
