Skipping lines with Enter

When pushing Enter, how do I keep the new paragraph from stubbornly skipping
a line? How do I reset it?

Hi, Dorothy. It's usually one of two things: AutoFormatting has taken over
your machine, or you pasted in information from another source that uses a
style in which the paragraph has a double-line formatting.

I _always_ go into Tools>>Options>>Edit and uncheck "Tabs set left indent",
and then Tools>>AutoCorrect, and visit each tab unchecking *every* "Replace"
and "AutoFormat" option (except hyperlinks). Some of these you may want to
keep. (Note: I'm using Word 2000 - actual menu location may vary depending
on your version.)

More than likely, though, you've picked up a "rogue" style. With the
Formatting toolbar showing, click in normal-spaced text and see what Style
name is shown in the left-hand text box. Then click in the large-spaced
text and see if there's a different Style named. You can use the
Find/Replace (CTRL+H) to replace the one style with the other, or you can
use the Format Painter (the Paintbrush button on the top toolbar) to copy
the formatting you like and clone it onto the misbehaving paragraphs.

Be aware that either of these options will copy _everything_ of the chose
Style or format, including things you may not want. So there's another
option: directly format the offending paragraphs. Select the entire
paragraph (click three times in it) and then select Format>>Paragraph. Look
at the lower options for Space Before, Space After, and Line Spacing -
"standard" (if there really is such a thing!) is 0, 0, and Single.

To help you in the future, start by reading the below article, and then

With all due respect for the credible info from Ed, you may have simply set
your line spacing to something other than 1 (Single)... now that there is a
button on the toolbar for that setting it's easy to hit by mistake or just
out of curiosity.

Go to Format Paragraph and set Spacing Before/After to 0.

Y'know - I never use those buttons, so I removed them from my toolbar - and
promptly forgot they exist!! Thank you for pointing out the simple and
obvious. (Not that Word is either of those on a regular basis, but
sometimes you get lucky!)

Easy for me 'cause I'm a simple-minded guy who's incapable of overthinking
_anything_! :)

Ed,

Thanks for the pointer int he right direction. I was having a sinliar
problem as Dorothy I think. Every time I would hit RETURN Word would ignore
the format of my document and apply a 6pt Before spacing to that new
paragraph.

I tried looking everywhere and then I read this post. You suggested
checking the Style being applied and low and behold Microsoft has set the
Normal Style to have a 6pt Before and 0pt After Line Spaning setting.

Hey Microsoft THIS IS NOT NORMAL!

Anyway, thanks Ed for pointing me in the right direction to finally fix
Microsoft's mistake.

It is possible to accidentally replace or overwrite a style with a different
formatting. Perhaps you worked with a document from a different user who
had modified their Normal style and somehow accepted it as a change. Word
has done - and will continue to do - crazier things!

Glad you could use what I wrote.

The default Normal style does not have any Spacing Before or After. This is
*not* Microsoft's doing.
