Do you mean you want to auto login without stopping at the Welcome screen.
If so it's the same as with XP. From an elevated command prompt type
control userpasswords2 (enter)

Uncheck the box for Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer, click Apply
At the Automatically log on dialog box enter the user name for the account
you want to login, and the password. Confirm the password and Ok out.

Do you mean the one where you click on your login name or the one called
"Welcome Center" - if it is the welcome center, just untick the box in the
bottom left of it.

I've unticked the box in the bottom left corner of the "Welcome Center" every
day since I bought an HP Pavillion with Vista on Feb 19. It still appears,
every day, and repeated messages to and from HP have failed to identify an
effective fix. Is there one? (I'm still pinging HP, and will share
answer...if they ever figure this one out.)

I've just installed the latest (and apparently only since purchase over 2
months ago) HP software update. The problem still occurs. Anything more
recent from anyone?

PWL:

My mother just purchased a HP Pavillion about two months ago and I set up
two accounts, one ADMIN, and one USER account. The first time I logged into
the ADMIN account I turned off the WELCOME CENTER and have not had it turn
back on. I also turned off the HP crap software that loads and it hasn't
come back on. However, in the USER account, no matter what I do, and I have
tried control panel from ADMIN account, registry entries, startup
folder......, nothing helps. Both the WELCOME CENTER and the HP software
just comes right back. I don't know if it is a VISTA problem or HP, but it
really makes using the computer less of an fun thing and more like this is
how "You should do it" like it or not. Hate to say it but maybe an Apple
MAC, god forbide is the way to go.....

Hi there,

I'm the guy who made the Welcome Center for Vista. It sounds like
there's a problem with the registry key that is scheduling Welcome
Center to run at startup.

You can use msconfig.exe to turn off both Welcome Center and the HP
software. Here are the steps:

1. run msconfig (it will require elevation)
2. click on the tab marked startup
3. disable the item that has the command "rundll32.exe
oobefldr.dll,ShowWelcomeCenter"
4. disable the HP software that you're not interested in
5. logoff, and log back in to verify the fix.

There's still a chance that Welcome Center isn't launched through that
mechanism. If you don't see those items, you can use autoruns (which
has a more complete list of software run at startup).
Autoruns is available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx

Hope that helps,

James;
Thank you for your response, I will give it a try. I have tried process
explorer and one other similar program, and when I rebooted, the WELCOME
CENTER that I had unchecked was still unchecked, however there was a new
"Duplicate" entry for WC that was checked. Leads me to believe that it may
be in multiple startup locations or in the services. Need to look deeper.
Thanks again for you help, I will post back to let you know if msconfig
worked. On a different note, I couldn't help but notice, does Bill know you
have a gmail account???? Just kidding and thanks again.

Brian,
It is the "Welcome Center" rather than the logon name screen, and I've
unticked the box repeatedly...it still opens every time I power on and log in.

James,

I've unticked as administrator to no avail. And, HP still hasn't replied.

LOL - Well, I generally check the newsgroups through Google Groups or
through Windows Live Mail Desktop Sentence Name. I can't use my passport to
post a reply on Google Groups. It's a shame that I happened to be on WLMD
for this reply. :)

P.S. I check my Google account VERY rarely, so don't email it directly if
you expect a response this month/year.

Cheers,
