Sizing images

I am a novice and wondered how I could reduce the size of an image I found on
the internet. I am trying to use it as an AVITAR and it is apparently too
large. When I reduce it, it changes from a jpeg to a "bit map image" and is
not accepted. Is there a simple explanation as to how to get an internet
image to work as an AVITAR??? Any response would be welcomed. Thanks.

Download a free image viewing/management program like irfanview - the
help menu has it all.
