size the dropdown list in Excel

I am creating an excel worksheet. One of the yes/no dropdown boxes is
extremely wide - how can we make it narrower?
 
I've seen this problem in worksheets with other cells with data
validation in the same row, and all dropdowns became the width of the
widest dropdown. In most cases, one of the data validation lists was in
a merged cell.

Sometimes, the dropdown returned to normal width if I deleted any
columns that contained merged cells with data validation, resized all
the columns, saved and closed the file.
