size of windows

Recently, for no apparent reason, when i open new windows
they are very small and i need to press the 'restore'
icon to get them the right size. How can i get them to
open in full size straight off - as they always used to?

goto the edge, get a double arrow, left click and hold and
drag to size, release, close window
