So far as I know there has been a limit on the size of Word documents (text)
of 32 Mb, at least since Word 97 and continuing into Word 2003. So far as I
know none of the limitations in Word 2003 are different from those in Word
2000. I didn't answer the original poster because I don't have a complete
reference for the limitations. I do, know, though, that there are real
limitations.

There has never been a size max for Word documents. The size of a Word doc
is only limited by the amount of resources available on the PC on which the
file is being used. Depending on the size of your document, perhaps the
graphics are not in the best format, and could be compressed, or perhaps the
document has become corrupt. Either can really bog down a file. However,
I've had people say "Can I send you a really big file?", only to find it was
600KB and they thought this was big. To me, a big Word document is 10+MB,
regardless of the number of pages. My entire Word book (330 pages w/about
100 graphics) was a little over 4MB.
