Sites list lost.........

Henk de Jong

Hi @ll,

Last week I ran into a hard-disk crash. It happened while I made a
backup of the 'my documents'-folder, using Cobian backup.

Because I store my backup on another harddisk, I hoped that I could
restore my system easily after installing a new harddisk. It all went
very well (thanks to my daily backup) but when I wanted to update my
site today, I discovered that I lost one (only one) file. And I'm sorry
to say this, but it was the file in which I had stored all the new
links from Mark's daily link-summary. It is very stupid, but I have
forgotten to include that file in my backup :-(

Mark Carter, when you are reading this: I cannot access your
news-server again. Is it offline?

In the next days I'll be busy trying to rebuild that file.

My next update will be in a couple of days, but it will be a small one.

With kind regards,

Umm, I don't have a news-server. I did post a news-server, but that
belonged to a guy named Ceg, who has moved house, and no longer runs the
server owing to bandwidth limitations. He still runs a website, though:
http://cgi.anandaquest.com/news.php
.... not that that will actually solve your problems, though.

If you're using Thunderbird, don't forget that you can filter by sender,
so you'll be able to see my last posts. Or you could always Google
alt.comp.freeware for "alt.comp.freeware links".

Does that help?

I probably still have the original posts on the server I had running. I
could crank that server back up again, but y'all would have to catch it
during the times when I'm logged on.

No, not really at this time. I had almost 250 new sites on that list.
But in case I have nothing to do in the days between Christmas and New
Year, I now know what I *can* do..........

I suppose that's no way to spend christmas, innit?

Would having a link summary that stretched back to, say, the beginning
of the year be any good for you? I imagine that it would have well over
250 links, though.

What I don't understand, though, is how you would know whether a link
was on you original list of 250, or not. Or wouldn't that be a problem?

If you're looking for recent listings, what I have probably won't help you.
I took the server offline late in October just before moving down here to
Bug Tussle. I haven't put it back online since we can only get a dial-up
here and I can't keep it online 24/7. If you want the early posts, let me
know or email me at ceg at anandaquest dot com and I'll get what I have
together for you. In fact, as much propwash as comes through here you might
be better off emailing me so I don't miss your posts.

That would be nice. As far as I can recall the list went back to
July/August. When you have those summaries from, let's say August, and
you could mail them to me, that would be a great help. Thanks.

No, not really. Bur when everybody is watching the TV, I could go
through those list. In general, In general, I don't like what the Dutch
TV is offering me.

I think I'll have to start that list over again, although I remembered
a couple of sites from your summaries. I'll add those in the coming
weeks.

I learned from Ceg that he could send me the summaries from August
until October.

I don't see any way to export the posts. If you want to download a copy of
Argo's news server I can send you the data file with the posts which you can
drop into the proper folder and use your copy of Argo's news server
locally...or you can try tuning into news server ceg.sytes.net on port 119
no login required.

Ceg, thank you very much. I just downloaded the message-bodys from your
server. As far as I can see I'm now able to start that list again.
Thanks.

Mark deserves the credit...he created the link posts. I just gave him
someplace to house them while I had the resources available.
