site found and waiting but always hangs

Hi,
For some reason my computer has started this problem recently. I try to
connect using IE6 to the inernet and I get the message (Bottom Right)
'Website Found Waiting for Reply..' It then just hangs for ever and I am
unable to access any website at all. I have tried to update my antivirus
(AVG) and again it just hangs on the update page. I have upgraded to IE7 but
this hasn't changed anything. I have checked another computer on the same
network cable and it connects straight away. I don't have any virus or
spyware on the machine and it is the same on all the users on the computer.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Do you have Google Desktop installed? If so try closing it and see if it
improves things.

Google desk top isn't installed.

In that case, when it hangs bring up Task Manager and see if any processes
are using a lot of CPU, if so it might give you a clue as to what's going
on.

Again, that is the weird thing. Task manager is running normally and there
are no obvious error messages in the event viewer.

Hi Robear,
I forgot to mention that I am able to ping the router and any site without
any problems. I have tried all the methods mentioned in the Microsoft page
from your post except the hosts file that I will do on Monday.
I also haven't replaced the network card but if it is pinging ok then I
think that is working fine. I have done a thorough check for virus's and
spyware - nothing. I will post back after the hosts file check.

I have checked everything on the Microsoft page and still I am having the
same problem. I managed to get Google page up (the pictures wouldn't appear
though) once but only once and no other site has appeared
