simple problem with home network

I am visiting a friend who has a broadband connection. The
router has two outcoming sockets in which his desktop (XP)
is connected.

I connected my laptop (XP) onto the free socket and now I
can only use internet on my laptop. REnewing the IPaddress
on the desktop gives the following message: "an error
occurred while renewing interface local area connection :
An operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket."

PLEASE Help me! My friend is coming back tomorrow and I
need to solve this before he comes back...
