Simple percentage formulas

I would like to have Excel work out the VAT purchase tax element at 17.5%, automatically, in the VAT column cell next door to my nett amount column on my Sales Invoice ledger. So if the job price was £100.00 I want the VAT cell reading £17.50. I've tried every combination of formula I can think of and consulted "Microsoft Excel help" under the Help menu

I'm sure it must be possible to do this. All suggestions gratefully accepted

Michael,

I create a named range (menu Insert>Name>Define...) with a name of VAT and a
RefersTo value of =17.5%. This way, we can use a formula such as

=A1*VAT

If VAT changes, it's simple to redefine the value and the formulae
automatically update.
