I have a Dell PC running Windows XP and a Compaq laptop running Windows 98.
Both identified as Dell & Compaq under work group "Dunromin". Both are
equipped with Ethernet cards and connected to a D-Link router. I can access
the internet from the Dell but not the compaq. I have run the network set up
wizard but the two computers do not recognize each other. I have had the
network operational some time ago (before the laptop travelled) so I know
that it can be done, but after two days of frustration I still cannot get it
going. I know I must have one or more settings wrong. I am hopeful that
someone will be able to guide me through this problem as my next alternative
is to try to fix it with a hammer. Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Wayne,

Leave the hammer alone.

Start by providing ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Wayne,

Try again please. IPConfig for two dofferent computers, not twice for one
computer.

And let's try formatting it a bit better, instruction changed slightly:
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, Open
c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Wayne,

Well, to start, clint is not showing any signs of being connected to the router.
It's self assigning a 169.254.x.x address.

Have you done hardware diagnostics on the PCMCIA ETher adapter on clint? Do you
see the correct lights on the adpter, and on the router, showing it connected
successfully?

Is it clint connecting with a known good cable? Try the cable / router port
used to connect Dell, and see if it changes anything. Any clues in the router
log?

Chuck, I'm finally back at it! I've checked the cable (no problem there).
There is no problem with the router but the light on the port to which the
laptop is connected does not light. The laptop seems happy with the D Link
card installed in it and when the computer is booted the indicator lights
seem to indicate that communication is made up to the cable. There are three
lights on the coupler. Tx/On & Ln/RX (both light on boot up) There is a third
"Col" which does not light.

Wayne,

The most obvious problem that you have to solve is ip address assignment. Clint
is setup for DHCP, and is not getting an address. This can have a few causes:
1) Physical - bad router port, bad network cable, bad network card on computer.
2) Logical - bad code on router, DHCP crippled / disabled on router, corrupt
code on computer.

Did you try switching cable / router port with Dell?

Check the router log, check DHCP settings on the router, any clues there? Does
the router have a MAC address filter (what model router)?

Could be corrupt network software on Clint. Somewhere here you might find help
for Windows 98:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm> or WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

If no help yet, un install and re install TCP/IP. Posting for help in
microsoft.public.win98.networking might be a good idea too.
