simple file sharing problem

My roommates computer is having the really bizarre problem of not being able
to access his own workgroup. We'll call that computer #1. I used the network
setup wizard on computer #1 and it still says computer #1 does not have
access to the server (workgroup).

After setting my computer (computer #2) up on this same workgroup and
enabling the guest account on both of our computers, computer #2 can see
computer #1 in my network places but cannot access it. Computer #1 cannot see
either #1 or #2 of course since the entire workgroup is inaccessible.

Computer #1 is able to ping computer #2. (by the way there is a router
between these machines) Computer #2 is unable to ping computer #1 (despite
being able to see the entire network including computer #1 !!?)

I'm simply trying to share some music files from computer #1 to computer #2
using "simple file sharing". I have done this many times before and never had
so much trouble getting it to work... please help.

well if your sure all your settings are correct then try restarting all
your PC's and the router. then try a cross over cable between the 2
PC's instead of going through the router if the problem still persists.
That will rule out the router as the problem. If the problem still
persists then double check all your settings again and if your
confident they're correct try a different network card in the PC. Its
important to consider that a bad network card can cause problems across
an entire network.
this is a tough one without being there.
