I have noticed that my computer is taking longer and longer to "unfreeze" at
startup. I think I have tons of programs setup to auto start at startup. I
have sypbot and mcafee. I have checked the startup shortcuts (Start -->
Program Files --> Startup). I have also downloaded the bootVis.exe program.
In the old days, I would just edit the autoexec.bat file and REM out the
programs I didn't want to launch at startup

Is there a similar file in WIN XP that will allow me to REM out startup
activities?

Start > run > msconfig > startup and uncheck those you don't want to start.

Start - Run - MSconfig.exe, look in the Startup page and uncheck lines.
Exit - do not bother to reboot, but next time you do there will be a
message about 'System Configuration'. Check the 'Do not show again' box
and exit

It is usually better where a program has an option of its own to 'run
when windows starts' to unset that instead - then the line will not get
restored when you run the program
