SimCity 4 installation problem

S

Steve

Hi,

I'm running XP professional, with ALL the updates applied
and DirectX 9.0b

I'm trying to install SimCity 4. The install routine
starts, asks for a language to install in and the code
number. Up to this point, all is fine.

I then receive a pop-up box titled "Dsetup.dll" with text
of "Cannot get address of DirectXSetupGetVersion" and an
OK button. Clicking the button brings up another pop-up
box titled "oops" with error text
of "m_DirectXSetupGetVersion is NULL" with an OK button.
Clicking this button ceases installation and generates an
error report for Microsoft (they must have a few by now!)

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

Steve

Hi Steve,

The game seems to not be able to detect the version of DX installed.
Lets run a diagnostic of your system to see if we can pinpoint the reason.

In order to Create a dxdiag.txt file: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
Afterwards click the "Save All Information..." button in the bottom row.

Send the Dxdiag file: Click Insert / File Attachment using Outlook Exp.,
or open the file in notepad, click Edit / Select All / Copy and then Paste
the data into your reply using the Ctrl+V command. Hope this helps! :)

Hi Steve,

DX Setup Parameters: Not found

That's from your dxdiagnostics and it's causing the error apparently.
EA should fix their installer to not fail in this situation, but perhaps
we can find a workaround. Search your hard drive for dsetup.dll
and report back here with the location and file version of each one
you find. We could theoretically delete or replace a file to fix this.

Jimmy,

You're a star. Thanks for all your help and for making me
think!

The version of Dsetup.dll in my Windows\System32
directory was version 4.04.00.0069 (DirectX for Windows
95).

I have now replaced this with the one that came with my
Directx9.0b setup and SimCity4 has installed and is
working.

Thanks again.

It has made me think, though. I presume the file has been
there since I upgraded from Win95 to 98 and then to XP.
Why wasn't the file replaced on upgrading? Are there any
other files that may not be the correct ones for XP? Do
you know of any tolls that I can run against my machine
that will tell me if I have the correct system file
versions for XP?

Regards,

Steve

Great news! I'm glad that worked for you. :)

I think your situation re-affirms why it's better to do a clean
install of a new OS instead of upgrading over an older one.
There are programs out there that will check drivers to see
if there are more up to date one's available, and I presume
they can check other software on your system as well, but
I prefer to take a non-proactive approach to those issues.

If it's working properly, don't replace it unless it's a security fix. ;-)

Hi Mike,

He searched his drive for the most recent version of dxsetup.dll
copied it to his Windows\System32 directory and it worked. :)

As Jimmy says, I did a search for dset* on my machine.
When you get the results back, right-click the one in
c:\Windows\system32 and check the properties. The file
version of the one I had, was 4.04.00.0069, which had a
product name of Microsoft® DirectX for Windows® 95.

The DirectX 9.0b setup that I downloaded from the
Microsoft web site has a Dsetup.dll and dsetup32.dll.
Dsetup.dll is version number 4.09.00.0902.

Renamed the Win95 version to Dsetup.old and then copied
in both of the new files and everything now works.

Steve

Microsoft web site has a Dsetup.dll and dsetup32.dll.
Dsetup.dll is version number 4.09.00.0902.

Renamed the Win95 version to Dsetup.old and then copied
in both of the new files and everything now works.

You're a star for posting that Steve, thanks! :)

Cheers,
Jimmy.

' Instead of dxdiag, why not just create
' a file named 90b.VBS and double click:

if "09000902" > replace(mid(createObject("wScript.shell").regRead(_
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX\Version"),3),".","")then
msgBox "You are using DirectX less than 9.0b", 48, ":-("
else msgBox "You are using DirectX 9.0b or better", 64, ":)"
end if
