I'm running Windows XP Pro SP1 with all service packs
installed on a P4 w 1 gig ram and a 120gig raid hard disk.

A while back I installed MSN Messenger (6.0.0602) over my
Windows Messenger (4.7.2009). I had problems disabling
Windows Messenger because they were both loading and one
would cancel the other. I disabled some services to try
and fix the problem and at the same time disabled some
services I thought might be viruses. Now I can't log
into either MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger. After a
while I get the following error:

"We were unable to sign you in to .NET Messenger Service,
possibly because of a problem with the service or with
your Internet Connection. Please make sure that you are
connected to the Internet."

I check the network status and everything shows no
problems.

I am running BlackIce firewall version 3.6.cbr but that
was running before I messed things up. I tried disabling
BlackIce but I still can't connect with either MSN or
Windows Messenger.

I was hoping to get a list of the services required to
run MSN or Windows Messenger or some other diagnostics to
run to see what could be the problem.

Thanks for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Bob Consorti

Please see my replies below. Basically I've tried all of
those suggestions and it didn't change the result.

Since I was fiddling with the Services I'm afraid I
disabled a Service that is needed by Messenger. If you
know of a list of required services that would be very
helpful.

Thanks for your assistance.

Greetings Bob,

Here are some suggestions you might want to check/try:

1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly --
double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.

Date is fine
2. If your password information is not saved, verify
that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).

Password is correct.
3. Change your password @
http://memberservicesnet.passport.com/memberservice.srf,
then try
signing in again.

Changed it and the result is exactly the same.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton
Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access
the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the
allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.

I'm using BlackIce but have tried both disabling it and
removing it with no effect.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still
may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a
problem (even if it is disabled).

Tried uninstalling it, uninstalling MSN Messenger,
reninstalling MSN Messenger and the result is the same.
6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet
Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button,
and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.

No change.
7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet
Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the
Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also
verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.

All items are set that way.
8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK

Then try again.

No effect.
If you're still insuccessful, you might just try using
System Restore to restore back to a
time when it did work. To do so, click Start, then Help
& Support, then "Undo changes to my
computer using System Restore" and use the wizard to
restore to a previous day.

I don't have a System Restore point that works.

Rats, I disabled System Restore so I don't have any
restore points to go back to.

Any suggestions for further debugging the problem?

Hi Bob,

No, there really isn't a list of services required,
because you can literally turn them all

Hi Bob,

Just to prove this to myself, I turned off every service I possibly could except for the
following:
Event Log
Plug and Play
Security Accounts Manager
and I was still able to login to Messenger.

My only suggestion would be to uninstall BlackICE. Also, have you tried logging into
Passport-enabled sites (go to http://www.passport.net and click Sign In at the top)?

I uninstalled BlackICE with no change in my ability to
login to Messenger.

I have no problem signing into passport sites. Also I
tried changing passports to use when logging into
Messenger with no difference.

If there a way to run Messenger in a logging mode so the
specific problem encountered is recorded?

Thanks again for your insights.
