Sidewinder Control Panel for XP

Been looking on microsoft.com to find a version of the sidewinder control
panel for my force feedback wheel to run with XP.

Downloaded 3.02 which says it's going to install things that are
incompatible with XP.

So is there a version for xp ?

If so where do I get it ?

I have games that need to have profiles generated and the standard control
panel game controllers does not offer this ability although it appears to
have correctly identified the wheel.

There is no version of Sidewinder software that will run under Windows
2000/XP. They abandoned it. You can use the embedded driver by using
the Game Controller applet in Control Panel and adding the "Microsoft
Sidewinder (autodetect)" device. However, that just gives you the
driver support of the device. The extra features of the Sidewinder
program are gone and you will have to rely on the game to provide
programmability of the Sidewinder if it is a supported device.

A bit cr*p but at least I now know.

Do you know what would happen if I try to install the control panel V3.02
which is for Win95/98 will it just not work or is it likely to trash my OS ?

I have a version 4.0 of the Sidewinder software, but it only works for USB
versions of the wheel. If you have the game port version of the wheel, this
newer software won't work.

Yeah I have the USB version but couldn't find V4 of the software anywhere
anyway. but will it work on XP ?
