shutdown

I've endured a problem shuttting down for nearly a month
now... It wont shutdown! Both, a shut down and restart
will result in the same: It will freeze at ''Windows is
shutting down''. In order to turn off the comp, i can
only power it off at the plug. I don't know if this is
relevant but i've attempted to restore and, though i list
checkpoints, i am told that after performing the restore,
it is unable to actually restore it...

Hi

For shutdown/restart problems, please have a look at MVP Jim Eshelman's web site:

Read sometime this week that spyware may be involved. Try the following
free programs to see if there is any:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

I've rebooted my comp in safeboot... In this mode, the
comp reboots as it should... the problem still persists.

Hi

If you have had this problem for nearly a month - the original problem may not be approachable now. Do you see any error messages that may be acted on?

Think about what you have recently changed or installed, no matter how
innocent it seemed to be prior to the problem appearing.

The safe Mode behavior gives a clue that you may have a program or driver
loading/running during your normal start up routine that may be causing the
problem. In Safe Mode, start up programs and most device drivers are not
loaded.

A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315222

You can start the troubleshooting by using the Configuration Utility which
controls the stsrt up programs.

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP:

You might also want to check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go
to start/Run and type eventvwr.msc and press OK. Click the 3 menu items
on the left and look for any "X" error messages. Double click the error
entry to see the details.

Go to Start/Run and type msinfo32 and press OK. Click Components/Problem
Devices to check for possible hardware problems.
