Dell Dimension (P-IV) running Windows XP won't shutdown, but has to be
done manually. Not exactly a showstopper, but a real pain in the A. in
any case. Informed comments, etc. most welcomed & thanks! ...

Probably caused by a program that will not close. If you run msconfig and
start experimenting by deselecting programs that normally start with the
computer and then restart and see if the computer will shut down
automatically without doing it manually you should be able to eventually
isolate the culprit program.
Once you find the program that's causing the problem try uninstalling it
and then reinstalling it to see if the issue goes away. And if not try going
to the publisher's website to see if there is either a patch or a newer
version of the program may be available.

I'd start by checking Device Manager and the "Computer" entry
near the top. If you click the "+" next to the word "Computer",
is one of the words in the thing below computer "ACPI" ? If
so, that helps with the soft-off function. If it says
something like "Standard PC", then you may end up seeing
the equivalent of the old Win98 "it is safe to turn off this
computer" kind of message.

If it takes a long time, from selecting "Shutdown" in Windows,
until the power goes off, then get a copy of "UPHClean" from
Microsoft and install that. That helps release registry hives
that are still open for some reason.

Tried disabling all Startup items in msconfig, and it still won't
shutdown ...

Under Computer I've got "ACPI Uniprocessor PC"

It now takes essentially "forever" etc.

What is "UPHClean" and just where do I get a copy, etc.

When the shutdown hangs (and you have to reset or power cycle), go into
Event Viewer to see if something happened at the time you tried to shutdown
(remember to note the time). Could be a process is refusing to comply with
a request to exit it.

It progresses through Windows is shutting down, to a dark screen, but
doesn't shutdown. How to access the Event Viewer at that point? Is
that somehow part of the Task Manager? ...

With Windows Shutdown, the dark screen is unresponsive to anything,
except a manual shutdown ...

Thanks for info. Very interesting.

Not sure what I'm looking for ...

There's one "Error" for a "Service Control Manager" at or about the
time of attempted shutdown. How to ID the "Service" and what to do
about it?
