Shutdown/Sleepmode problems

I just upgraded a computer using a Biostar M7NCD
motherboard/AMD 2500+ processor and WD80 GB HD. Hardware
is Nvidia Geforce video,CDRW, DVD player,7 in 1 flash card
reader (USB 2, connected to pinouts on MB). LAN and Audio
are onboard.

Installed XP Pro, computer runs good. However, if I hit
the sleep button on the keyboard, the computer reboots. If
I use the Start>Turn Off Computer>Shutdown, it goes
through the "Windows is preparing to shutdown",and then
reboots. The only difference between the two is the sleep
goes back to the logon screen, the shutdown boots back to
the Bios screen.

I have tried disconnecting hardware with no luck. I tried
to install NT/Apm Legacy Support- no luck, Code 37
(installed but could not initialize driver). Cleared
Prefetch, ran virus scan/Adaware/Window Washer. Cleared
Bios CMOS, load Default settings>load Optimized settings.
Now the computer will shut down properly, but not enter
sleep mode. If I try to use sleep mode, it screws up the
computer's ability to shutdown correctly again.

I can't find any more options to try...any ideas would be
appreciated. Have no idea why I got the error code on the
NT/Apm Legacy support...I've read post where others have
successfully installed this and it fixed the problem.

Thanx,
Fitz

.
the shutdown issue is a easy fix. go to
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP
ands follow the xp shut down fix.
as far as using sleep or hyperate it is recommemed that
you don't use it. there are some issues with it and
microsoft has not yet released a fix for it. if you keep
usung it it will eventually crash your hard drive. and of
course MS isn't saying anything about it. but intell ms
comes out with a fix I won't use it all all...Rb

Thanks for the reply. I tried downloading and executing two separate
startup/shutdown issue patches, neither one of which would execute. One said
it wasn't valid with SP1, the other said it was the wrong version OS.
I finally tracked the problem ("culprit") down to a software issue...my wife
installed the EBay toolbar. It placed itself in the startup sequence on had
no option to turn off. Uninstalling fixed the problem.
