shutdown on startup

My XP pro system gets to the logon screen, and I enter
the user password, the system seems to start and logon as
the user, but then it immediately logs out and returns to
the Ctl/Atl/Del logon screen. I trying starting in safe
mode with the same results, also tried logging in as
administrator with the same result. Also tried booting
with the last known good configuration using F8 on
startup, but still no luck.

Anyone have any other ideas before I do a re-install??
