windows xp will not shut down because of a message displaying END
PROGRAM-SAMPLE. tried deleting all sample files, and system restore. no
effect. will only shut down by pressing END NOW.

Actually this is a fairly common problem on many XP machines. Try removing
and installing the latest version of MS Desktop Search (if installed). Try
removing and installing the latest version of AOL Instant Messenger (if
installed). Try removing any recently installed software, within the time
that the problem first appeared. A lot of people just live with this
problem.
