Shut Down

P

Paul Gauci

I use Vista Ultimate.

Recently after I go through the Shut Down procedures, I have been noting
that after the disappearance of the windows interface, the computer would
still be on and I would have to shut down by pressing the power switch for a
few seconds.

When I do not prerss this switch, windows restarts after about ten minutes;
after I receive a brief report (which I never manage to read in full)
informing me that a software may not have been properly installed or that I
need a windows update.

This problem appeared long after I installed all the software that I use,
and I have checked whether I'm fully updated (I am).

Is there a way in which I can ensure this problem does not occur when I go
through the normal shut down procedures?

Thanks

Until you find the answer to the problem - which will be some driver
malfunction - you can go to www.grc.com and download Wizmo which you can use
to force a shutdown no matter what.

Did you use it hanging the properties in the shortcut? You have to make it
Wizmo shutdown! with the exclamation mark and it kills off anything and
shuts down. Put the Wizmo program in Windows.

Have you tried issuing this command from cmd:

shutdown -s -f -t 1

I've never had a hanger from using the force switch with the shutdown
command.

I tried it in both Windows and Windows\systems and used the excalataion mark.
But it did not work.

The problem seems to be in the peripherals as whenever I tried to safely
remove, say a pen drive or an external hard disk, I always have to shut down
as the safely remove hardware capability does not seem to function at all.

will try

I tried Safe Mode and Shut Down took place without any problems at all.

Lately when I start-up after experiencing this problem, Windows indicates
that the problem is caused by an NVIDIA graphics driver and suggests that I
check for a driver update. I have tried the NVIDIA Website but there was no
reference to the graphics card installed in my machine, namely GeForce 8600M
GT - I only found a driver for GeForce 8700M GT.

I am a Mac Book Pro user.

How are you shutting down? Are you clicking the Start Orb, then using
the orange "Shutdown" icon to the left of the Lock, or are you clicking
the Expand button button then selcting "Shut Down". If the former, then
you are not really shutting down, but putting the computer into standby
(which doesn't sem to be working properly).

To change the Orange standby button to a Red shutdown button, do the
following:

- Open Control Panel
- Click "System and Maintenance"
- Click "Power Options"
- Click "Change plan settings" for the currently selected power plan
- Click "Change advanced power settings"
- Expand the entry "Power buttons and lid"
- Expand the sub entry "Start menu power button"
- Change the setting to "Shut down"
- Click OK
- Close Control PanelIf you are indeed using Shut Down (or the "restart" problem persists),
then you'll need to check the ACPI settings in your BIOS to find out why
the system is not shutting down as it should.

I have tried the Control Panel ... procedure and it worked.

Thanks a lot Peter.

I was relieved as I could not figure out how to access BIOS.
