How long did you wait? My Vista Ultimate x64 desktop sometimes takes 20
minutes or more to power off. I'm not sure of the pattern, but there may be
some housekeeping chores running in the background, such as indexing or
defragmenting.
HOW do you "shut it down manually"? By pressing the power button?

I had that Monday & Tuesday on Vista Ultimate. I had loaded some extra
software for my X-Fi from creative and this was causing a hang a the
shutdown screen.
I did a system restore to Saturday just before installing the software
and, touch wood, shutdown now completes as it should.
Have you installed something recently? Can you restore to a point before
this problem?
