Windows hangs at shut down. It never shuts down properly.
I looked in the KB about this issue and it said that I
had to go to the power options in control panel and under
a tab called APM check the box that says "enable advance
power management support". I tried it several times on
various xp machines and it seemed to work but on this on
particular XP machine, it doesn't have that tab. Is there
anyway I can install it or a work around for this problem?

The machine is running Win XP with service pack 2.

if it doesnt have the tab, your motherboard probably doesnt support that
feature.

oh ok. Thanks.
Do you know of a way to stop it from hanging like that?
Other than check what recently installed programs he
installed that may have caused the problem. Do you know
of anyother fixes for the problem?

sometimes there's an option in the BIOS to select the operating system. if
it's not selected as "windows xp" or "windows" that MIGHT cause problems.

can you do a ctrl+alt+delete while it's hung to see if any programs are
running in the background?

maybe there's a virus on the computer, have you scanned?

I know in Windows 98 one cause for the hang at shutdown was a lot of mapped
network drives, although this should be fixed in XP, do you have a lot of
mapped network drives?

Yeah he is on a network with a lot of mapped drives. No I
haven't scanned yet but normally if someone gets a virus
then I.T is the first to be alerted. I will scan just to
be sure though. I will also check the BIOS to see what's
up. Thanks.
