shut down

I have windows 2000. It recently developed a fault. When
I click on "Start" then "Shutdown", nothing happens. I
can carry on as if I did not click on "Shutdown".

Not really the best group for your question - win2000.general might be a
better place. However - more info will help - what SP are you running, and
what do you see in your system event logs?
